Police are searching for a man accused of causing his partner’s death yesterday. The woman died from injuries inflicted by the suspect, who had not been located as of last night.

The couple reportedly resided in a rented property at the upscale Albert Lee Place, off Nailuva Road in Suva. A family member notified her partner, which led to the police being called.

Authorities have announced that they are investigating the incident and that a post-mortem examination will determine the cause of death.

Last night, the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection expressed its sadness and outrage over the incident in a statement.

“The ministry calls for swift justice for the victim and urges immediate action from all levels of society to prevent further tragedies,” the statement read.

“We stand in solidarity with the victim’s family and all those affected by this horrific violence. This incident follows a similar case from April, where a woman met a tragic end in the same manner.”

It was highlighted that violence against women and girls remains a significant issue in Fiji, with nearly two out of three women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

“We call on every individual, family, and community to take action and work together to eliminate violence against all women and girls. Each Fijian has a role in ensuring our homes and communities are safe for all women and girls.”

Minister Lynda Tabuya remarked, “This loss is unacceptable and heartbreaking. To all women and girls, you are not alone. Help is available through the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, the National Domestic Violence Helpline (1560), and the Child Helpline (1325). We stand with you and will fight for justice for the victim. No woman should live in fear.”

In June 2023, the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls (Fiji NAP PVAWG) was launched as a key part of Fiji’s response to this ongoing crisis.
