Tragic Death Sparks Child Abuse Investigation: A Mother’s Partner Charged

A man in his 30s has been charged in connection with the death of a one-year-old child in Cunningham last week. Medical officials notified the Totogo Police last Thursday after the child was pronounced dead at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The case was referred to law enforcement due to the victim having visible injuries that were allegedly the result of an assault.

Following an investigation, police gathered more evidence indicating that the accused, who is the defacto partner of the child’s mother, had a history of abusive behavior. Investigators also discovered that the accused had allegedly assaulted the victim’s three-year-old brother, who was found at the home with visible injuries.

The investigation led to consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The accused has since been formally charged with one count of murder, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. He is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
