Tragic Cyberbullying Incident Sparks Call for Stricter Laws

The tragic passing of Esala Seru Lewamama, known as Ranadi Kei Viti or simply Ranadi within the FemLINKpacific network, has deeply saddened the organisation.

Ranadi, a member of the Rural Women Leaders Community Media Network in the Central Division, died on Thursday morning. The death is suspected to be a result of suicide, following claims of cyberbullying on the Facebook platform, Chat Fiji.

Fay Volatabu, executive director of FemLINKpacific, highlighted the severe impacts of online harassment and bullying. She expressed hope for stricter laws against online violence.

“What has transpired is a result of harassment and bullying that happens online, which can lead to negative impacts, such as the taking of one’s life. We are saddened by this tragedy, and we hope that stricter laws will be put in place to hold perpetrators of all forms of online violence accountable within our country,” she said.

FemLINKpacific condemns all forms of online violence, especially highlighting the devastating effects on women and vulnerable communities, including LGBTQIA+ members. Ms. Volatabu is urging the Government to implement stringent legal measures against online bullies.

The organisation calls for a comprehensive approach to combat cyberbullying. It stressed the need for online platforms to take responsibility for content moderation and for all users to be mindful of their online behavior. Additionally, it is advocating for increased access to psychosocial support services to assist those affected by online violence and mental health challenges.

FemLINKpacific has extended its condolences to Ranadi’s family and loved ones, hoping her passing will raise awareness and prompt action against cyberbullying and all forms of technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
