A tragic incident has occurred in Tacirua, where a 13-year-old student has reportedly become the latest victim of a road fatality in the country. According to the Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the young victim was traveling with four other passengers when their vehicle was struck by a truck driven by a 21-year-old man. It is believed that the truck driver lost control of his vehicle, causing it to cross into the opposite lane and collide with the car.
Emergency services quickly transported all individuals involved in the accident to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where sadly, the young victim was pronounced dead upon arrival. In addition to this incident, SSP Divuana reported two other severe accidents that took place the same day, contributing to a growing concern about road safety.
One of these incidents occurred on Mead Road, where a driver reportedly lost control and collided with a vehicle operated by a 52-year-old man. This driver is currently receiving treatment in the same hospital. Another alarming event happened on Daniva Road when a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man struck an 8-year-old student who allegedly crossed the road unexpectedly. That child is also being treated at the hospital.
SSP Divuana urged drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant, especially with the adverse weather conditions and warnings from the Fiji Meteorological Office. He emphasized the importance of taking all necessary safety precautions on the roads. While the current national road death toll stands at 54, a decrease from the previous year’s 73 fatalities offers a glimmer of hope for improved roadway safety if proper measures are adhered to.
This heartbreaking accident serves as a reminder of the essential need for increased awareness and adherence to road safety regulations. It is crucial for everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike—to prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
