A man in his 30s has been charged following the suspected death of a one-year-old child in Cunningham last week. Medical professionals notified Totogo Police on Thursday after the child was pronounced dead at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
The case was handed over to law enforcement due to visible injuries on the child, which appeared to be the result of an assault. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that the accused, who is the defacto partner of the child’s mother, had a reported history of abusive behavior.
Further inquiries also indicated that the accused allegedly assaulted the child’s three-year-old brother, who was found at the suspect’s residence with visible injuries.
After consulting with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the man has been officially charged with one count of murder, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. He is set to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
