Parents are being urged to prioritize the safety and supervision of their children during the school break, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO), Livai Driu. This message comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, who was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River last Saturday.
The young girl was with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt after a trip to gather edible lady fern (Ota). Despite the community’s efforts, the search for the little girl had to be paused due to darkness and adverse weather conditions. Fortunately, her body was recovered the following morning, a somber conclusion to a distressing event.
In light of this tragedy, ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of vigilance, encouraging parents to monitor their children closely and spend quality time with them during the holidays. He advised against attending large gatherings, as safety should be the top priority during this time.
This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the perils that can arise in a moment of inattention. It highlights the need for community awareness and active parenting, particularly in nature-rich environments where children often explore.
In a hopeful note, this could be an opportunity for local communities to come together to educate one another about safety measures and strategies for protecting children, potentially preventing such tragedies in the future. Engaging children in supervised recreational activities can foster a safer environment, while keeping families united during the holiday season.
