Two tragic accidents occurred yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in two fatalities. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents took place in the early hours of the day.

The first accident took place shortly after midnight when a 38-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while driving towards Nadi along Barara flat. Unfortunately, the vehicle veered off the road, and although he and three passengers were quickly rushed to Lautoka Hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries. Currently, two of the passengers remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.

The second accident was reported around 3 a.m. and is believed to have involved a hit and run. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who immediately transported him to the hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana confirmed that traffic investigators are looking into the incident to identify the vehicle involved.

In a broader context, the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 for the same time frame last year, which indicates a potential improvement in road safety awareness and enforcement measures. This serves as a reminder to all road users about the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic rules to prevent future tragedies.

Overall, while these accidents are heartbreaking, the decrease in road fatalities this year provides a glimmer of hope that community efforts may be making an impact in saving lives on the road.
