Tomasi Waimuka was filled with heartbreak after receiving the tragic news that his son, Aporosa Momo, had become a victim of a hit-and-run accident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka early Saturday morning. Momo, 26, was found injured by a passerby who quickly took him to Lautoka Hospital, but he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
Mr. Waimuka, who resides in Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, shared that they had just returned from a funeral the day before, and Momo had mentioned his intention to visit relatives later that night. The devastating news reached Mr. Waimuka when his nephews knocked on his door, informing him of the accident. “I had only wished to see him alive with just a minor injury,” he said, clearly shaken by the loss. Upon arriving at the scene, he was heartbroken to find his son’s body covered, as police had restricted the family from approaching.
Aporosa Momo is remembered as a dedicated father to two young children and an active member of his community, often helping during local events. Mr. Waimuka expressed his deep sense of loss, stating how much he will miss his son and reflecting on his contributions to their settlement, as well as his passion for playing rugby in Lautoka.
In a separate incident, SSP Mitieli Divuana reported another road accident that resulted in the death of Ronesh Chand, a 38-year-old businessman from Nadi. Chand lost control of his vehicle while driving on Barara Flat after midnight Friday. He was accompanied by three others who were rushed to the hospital following the accident. While two passengers are in stable condition, the third has been discharged.
Despite these tragic events, there is a glimmer of hope as the road death toll is lower this year, with 50 fatalities compared to 71 during the same period last year. Authorities continue to investigate these accidents to enhance road safety and prevent future tragedies.
The sense of loss and community spirit is palpable in these situations, reminding us of the importance of road safety and supporting one another during difficult times.
