Tragedy Strikes: Hit-and-Run Claims Young Father in Lautoka

Tomasi Waimuka was left mourning the loss of his son, Aporosa Momo, who tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in what is believed to be a hit-and-run accident along Drasa Avenue in Lautoka early Saturday morning. A passerby discovered the 26-year-old Momo and rushed him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr. Waimuka, a resident of Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, recounted the night prior when the family had returned from a funeral. His son had mentioned he would be visiting relatives, and only hours later, Mr. Waimuka received the devastating news of Momo’s accident from two nephews. His hopes for a minor injury were dashed upon arriving at the scene, where he found his son’s body covered by a sheet, with police preventing any interaction.

The family is left shattered by the loss, particularly as Momo leaves behind two young children. Mr. Waimuka expressed his grief, emphasizing his son’s contributions to community functions and his involvement in a local rugby league team.

In addition to this tragic incident, another road accident occurred early Friday, resulting in the death of 38-year-old businessman Ronesh Chand. Mr. Chand lost control of his vehicle while driving near Barara Flat, leading to a crash that seriously injured three passengers. His passengers were taken to Lautoka Hospital, where Mr. Chand ultimately succumbed to his injuries, while the remaining passengers are reported to be stable.

Despite the current road toll of 50—an improvement compared to 71 at the same time last year—these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need for greater awareness and precautions on the roads.

In reflecting on the experiences of these families grappling with loss, we can nurture hope through community support and solidarity during these difficult times. Together, we can work towards safer roads and a stronger, more vigilant society.
