Tomasi Waimuka’s heart-wrenching story unfolded early Saturday morning when he learned that his son, Aporosa Momo, had tragically become a victim of a hit-and-run incident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka. The 26-year-old was discovered by a passerby who hastily transported him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
Waimuka, who resides in Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, recounted that they had attended a funeral the day before. Later that night, Momo had mentioned his plans to visit relatives. “Just a few hours later, my nephews knocked on our door, bringing the devastating news that my son had been involved in a hit-and-run and was critically injured. My only wish was to see him alive with perhaps just a minor injury,” he expressed with profound grief.
Upon reaching the accident scene, Waimuka was devastated to find his son’s body covered. “He leaves behind two young children, and this is truly heartbreaking,” he lamented. Momo was known for his community involvement, always willing to assist others, and had played on a rugby league team in Lautoka.
In a separate incident, SSP Mitieli Divuana reported another road accident that occurred just after midnight on Friday, which claimed the life of Ronesh Chand, a 38-year-old businessman from Nadi. It was indicated that Mr. Chand lost control of his vehicle while driving on Barara Flat. He was traveling with three passengers, two of whom are currently in stable condition, while one has since been discharged from the hospital. Tragically, Mr. Chand succumbed to his injuries.
SSP Divuana mentioned that investigations into both accidents are underway. Despite the alarming roadway fatalities, with the current toll at 50 compared to last year’s 71 for the same period, these incidents highlight the ongoing need for vigilance on the roads.
The community’s response to these tragedies serves as a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of safety on the roads. As families grieve, it is essential to honor their memories and work towards preventing such devastating occurrences in the future.
