A family in Vunivau, Labasa, experienced a heartbreaking loss last Friday night when a fire completely destroyed their home, which had been built over 45 years and was valued at approximately $200,000. Prasheel Naicker, 27, explained that his father, grandmother, and uncle were at the residence during the incident, while he was in Labasa Town attending a gathering.
The fire is believed to have started in the family’s prayer room and quickly spread, a situation first noticed by two passersby who alerted the family. Despite Naicker’s immediate efforts to contact the National Fire Authority (NFA) multiple times and even rushing to the local fire station to prompt a quicker response, the firefighters arrived too late to save the property or any belongings. Naicker expressed his frustration about the delayed response, suggesting that faster action could have allowed them to salvage some of their possessions.
This incident marks the second major house fire within the Northern Division in a two-week period; the first occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, destroying another family’s home while they were traveling abroad. This earlier fire, which resulted in estimated losses of around $250,000, has raised significant concerns regarding fire safety in the region, particularly due to the limited resources available for emergency responses in rural areas.
Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, Acting Divisional Police Commander North, confirmed that investigations are ongoing into both fires. The tragic events have initiated important discussions about the need for enhanced fire safety measures and preparedness within the community. The recurring incidents highlight not only the urgent need for improved emergency response capabilities but also the critical importance of community vigilance regarding fire risks.
In the face of these challenges, there is hope that the resilience shown by the affected families and the support from the community will inspire the development of better fire safety protocols and emergency response strategies in the future. By rallying together, the community can work towards creating a safer environment for all residents, reinforcing the vital role of collective responsibility in preventing such tragedies.
