Kamenieli Varo, a father of five, has tragically become a potential drowning victim in New South Wales, following an incident in the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco on Sunday. Reports indicate that the 32-year-old went missing after a picnic with friends at Middle Beach, prompting a response from NSW Police around 5:15 PM.

Upon receiving the report, officers from the Murrumbidgee Police District, in conjunction with NSW Ambulance and local rescue teams, initiated a comprehensive search for Mr. Varo. Despite their efforts, the search was hampered by darkness and hazardous river conditions, leading to a temporary suspension at 8 PM. Operations resumed the following day, but the search for his body is still ongoing.

It is believed that strong currents in the river overwhelmed Mr. Varo, making rescue attempts by his friends unsuccessful. Originally from Navoci Village in Nadi, Fiji, Mr. Varo had moved to Australia in 2022 as part of the National Employment Centre Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme, and he was nearing the end of a four-year contract.

In a heartbreaking statement, his wife, Mere Dawai, shared the last conversation she had with him. He was filled with excitement about their upcoming Christmas celebrations and had been looking forward to surprising his family. Ms. Dawai expressed deep sorrow at the loss of her husband, whom she described as caring and kind-hearted, always willing to help others.

This tragic event highlights the fragility of life and the impact of unforeseen circumstances. While the situation is devastating for the family, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of safety during leisure activities near water bodies. The community is united in hopes for a swift and respectful conclusion to the search, and we can only hope that Mr. Varo’s family finds comfort during this challenging time.
