A tragic incident occurred when the body of a 5-year-old girl was retrieved from Waisomo River after she was swept away by powerful currents. The young girl was crossing the river alongside her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children, returning from gathering edible lady fern when the unfortunate event took place.

Local authorities were notified of the incident by the village headman, known as the Turaga ni koro of Naituvatuvavatu village. Following standard procedures, the child’s body has been transferred to Korovou Hospital, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination.

In reflecting on this heartbreaking loss, it is important for communities to come together to prioritize safety, especially when engaging in activities that involve young children and natural water bodies. This incident highlights the need for increased awareness and potential safety measures in areas with strong river currents to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
