A tragic incident occurred yesterday in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong river currents. The little girl was crossing the Waisomi River with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt after a day of collecting edible lady ferns when the unfortunate event took place.
The situation was promptly reported to local authorities by the village chief, known as the Turaga ni koro. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu stated that a team of three police officers was dispatched to assist with the search efforts. However, the search had to be halted as darkness fell and inclement weather set in, but it is set to resume today.
ACPO Driu emphasized the critical importance of parental supervision, especially during school breaks. He urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s safety and to ensure they are spending quality time with them instead of being preoccupied with social gatherings.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by natural elements and the necessity for vigilance in safeguarding our children. As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome. It is a poignant call for families to prioritize their loved ones’ safety, particularly during times that typically invite outdoor activities.
