A young man with aspirations of building a brighter future for himself and his family tragically lost his life in an accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning. Isei Tamanikalou, 21, from Matanagata in Vatukoula, was preparing to return to Fiji National University to study engineering.

Police reported that he was one of three passengers in a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man that crashed on Kings Road in Naviyago, near Lautoka.

His grandparents expressed their deep sorrow, describing Isei as a bright and promising youth with a generous spirit who made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, is struggling to cope with the loss and remembers their last interaction just hours before the tragedy.

“We had just returned from church, and he mentioned he was going to Matanagata to see his friends,” she recalled, noting his love for the village and the friendships he cherished. That was the last time she saw him.

“He was a good boy, always shy and quiet but filled with love,” his grandfather, Epitani Tabua, reflected. “He was cheerful and well-liked by everyone, always eager to help around the house without asking for much.”

Isei had recently completed a certificate in electrical engineering, and his family was looking forward to his future endeavors. “He was enthusiastic about going back to university and was determined to improve his life,” Mr. Tabua said.

One of the most important relationships in Isei’s life was with his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, who had adopted him. “He always referred to him as ‘dad’ due to their close bond,” Mr. Tabua added. “Isei was too young and had a bright future ahead of him. Accepting his loss is incredibly difficult.”

An investigation by police into the accident is currently underway.
