The family of Ubayd Haider, a talented boxer from Fiji, is seeking clarity regarding the events that led to his tragic passing following a boxing match on October 26. Haider, who had been in a coma for 16 days after undergoing brain surgery, succumbed to his injuries at Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital.
Gyan Singh, Haider’s father and a veteran boxing trainer, expressed the family’s devastation and the need for answers surrounding the incidents during the South Pacific Boxing Promotions fight, where his son lost to China’s Runqi Zhou by technical knockout in the ninth round. After the match, Haider collapsed while heading to his changing room and was swiftly taken to several medical facilities before ultimately being admitted to Lautoka Aspen Hospital.
These events have raised concerns regarding the safety protocols in place during boxing matches, particularly the Boxing Commission of Fiji’s regulations that require a stretcher to be at ringside before any bout. The Boxing Commission and the Government have initiated a formal Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Pita Driti, to investigate the circumstances of Haider’s injury and subsequent death. This inquiry is expected to involve questioning at least ten individuals connected to the event.
Haider leaves behind his wife, Helen Margaret Singh, and their two young children. In her heartfelt tribute, she expressed gratitude for the moments they shared and emphasized that he would always hold a cherished place in her heart.
Throughout his professional career, Haider had shown promise in the sport, boasting a record of 10 wins, 2 losses, and 6 knockouts. The boxing community has also expressed its condolences, including Haider’s opponent, Runqi Zhou, who honored him as a true fighter.
His funeral is set to take place today, with public viewing available at the FMF Gym before the ceremony. The circumstances of this incident have highlighted the importance of athlete safety in professional sports, and hopefully, the inquiry will lead to reforms that ensure the protection of boxers in the future.
In times of sorrow, stories like Haider’s remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of tragedy. Let us honor his memory by advocating for the safety and well-being of all athletes.
