Tragedy Strikes as Elderly Isolation Leads to Heartbreaking Incident

Authorities have confirmed the death of a 79-year-old woman in Rakiraki, who reportedly set herself on fire at her home on Monday. Neighbors discovered her after she collapsed on a burning pile of rubbish and promptly took her to the hospital.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro stated that the woman died as a result of her burns.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran highlighted the increasing instances of loneliness and depression among older individuals. She noted that many elderly people are left behind as younger generations move abroad.

Kiran urged community networks and faith organizations to support older residents who might lack necessary assistance, suggesting they create opportunities for engagement to foster a sense of inclusion and purpose within society.

She emphasized the community’s role in suicide prevention, encouraging individuals to reach out to those who appear lonely. Kiran also revealed that 16 elderly individuals had taken their own lives between January and June of this year.
