A tragic accident has occurred involving a 13-year-old student, now believed to be the latest victim in a series of road fatalities. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the young victim was a passenger in a vehicle carrying four others on Princess Road in Tacirua when it collided with a truck driven by a 21-year-old man.
SSP Divuana reported that the truck driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to cross into the opposite lane and crash into the car. All occupants of the vehicle were quickly transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but sadly, the 13-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Additionally, SSP Divuana noted two other serious accidents on the same day. The first incident took place on Mead Road, where a driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a car driven by a 52-year-old man. The suspect is currently hospitalized. The second incident occurred on Daniva Road, where a 39-year-old man struck an 8-year-old student, who allegedly darted into the road. This young victim was also taken to the CWM Hospital and is receiving care.
In response to these accidents, SSP Divuana urged all drivers and pedestrians to exercise heightened caution given the adverse weather conditions and alerts from the Fiji Meteorological Office. So far this year, the national road death toll stands at 54, a reduction from 73 recorded in the previous year.
This unfortunate series of events highlights the critical need for awareness and safety on the roads, particularly in challenging weather. By prioritizing safety measures, communities can work towards reducing such tragic incidents in the future.
In summary, while these incidents evoke deep sadness, they also present an opportunity for increased awareness and safety measures that could help mitigate road accidents and save lives.
