A tragic incident has resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student, marking another loss in the rising toll of road fatalities in the country. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana revealed that the young victim was traveling as a passenger in a vehicle with four others along Princess Road in Tacirua when a truck, operated by a 21-year-old man, allegedly collided with their car.
According to SSP Divuana, the truck driver is suspected to have lost control, causing the vehicle to drift into the oncoming lane and collide with the car, leading to the unfortunate accident. All individuals involved were rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where the 13-year-old was declared dead upon arrival.
In addition to this incident, SSP Divuana reported two other serious accidents on the same day. The first occurred on Mead Road, where a driver reportedly lost control and struck another vehicle driven by a 52-year-old man. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, on Daniva Road, a 39-year-old man was involved in an accident where he struck an 8-year-old boy who suddenly entered the road. The child was also taken to the hospital and remains under care.
In light of the ongoing adverse weather conditions and warnings from the Fiji Meteorological Office, SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of safety on the roads. He urged both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution to minimize the risk of accidents.
Despite the increased number of road incidents, it is noteworthy that the national road death toll has seen a decrease, currently at 54 compared to 73 the previous year. This signals a potential for improved road safety measures and community awareness efforts.
Hope remains that with heightened awareness and proactive measures, the community can work together to enhance road safety and prevent further tragedies.
