A tragic incident has unfolded as a 13-year-old student has been identified as the most recent victim of a road fatality in the country. Authorities report that the young victim was a passenger in a vehicle alongside four others when a truck, driven by a 21-year-old man, allegedly collided with them on Princess Road in Tacirua yesterday afternoon.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana explained that the truck driver purportedly lost control, causing his vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane, leading to the fatal crash. The occupants of the car were quickly transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In addition to this tragic event, SSP Divuana noted that two other serious accidents were reported on Mead Road and Daniva Road the same day. In the Mead Road incident, a driver reportedly lost control and struck a vehicle operated by a 52-year-old man, necessitating the suspect’s hospitalization. On Daniva Road, a vehicle, driven by a 39-year-old man, struck an 8-year-old boy who allegedly crossed the road unexpectedly. The young boy is also receiving treatment at the hospital.
Given the current weather conditions and warnings from the Fiji Meteorological Office, SSP Divuana urged both drivers and pedestrians to exercise heightened caution to ensure their safety on the roads.
Currently, the national road death toll stands at 54, a decline from 73 in the previous period, indicating a potential positive trend in road safety despite these recent incidents.
This unfortunate news highlights the critical need for enhanced road safety measures and vigilant driving, particularly in adverse weather conditions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and preventive actions to safeguard lives on the road.
