A tragic accident has claimed the life of a 13-year-old student, marking the latest addition to the nation’s road fatality statistics. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana reported that the young victim was a passenger in a vehicle, which was traveling with four others along Princess Road in Tacirua when a truck, driven by a 21-year-old man, collided with them.
According to SSP Divuana, the truck driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to swerve into oncoming traffic and resulting in the crash. Emergency services quickly transported all occupants to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but unfortunately, the 13-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Additionally, two other serious accidents were noted yesterday. One occurred on Mead Road, where a driver allegedly lost control and crashed into another vehicle, operated by a 52-year-old man; the suspect was subsequently hospitalized. Another incident on Daniva Road involved a vehicle hitting an 8-year-old boy who is currently hospitalized after reportedly crossing the road unexpectedly.
In response to the current weather conditions, SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of safety for both drivers and pedestrians. He urged everyone to exercise caution on the roads. Despite the somber statistics this year, with the national road death count at 54 compared to 73 last year, there remains hope for improved road safety through community awareness and proactive measures.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance on the roads, especially during adverse weather conditions. By emphasizing safety and adherence to road regulations, we can work towards reducing road-related tragedies in the future.
