Tragedy on the Tracks: One Dead in Fiji Locomotive Incident

A tragic incident occurred in Tavua, Fiji, where a man lost his life after an accident involving a locomotive on a train lane bridge. The 55-year-old victim, also from Tavua, passed away while a 44-year-old man was hospitalized following the mishap.

Both men were engaged in transporting filled railroad carts to the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Mill in Ba when the accident took place around noon yesterday, as reported by Divisional Police Commander Western, Senior Superintendent of Police Iakabo Vaisewa.

According to authorities, the locomotive veered to the left and fell into a dry creek, dragging several cane carts with it, as it approached the FSC Train Lane Bridge in Lausa. There was a significant five-meter drop at the site. The driver and the deceased were trapped inside the locomotive, but they were eventually rescued by local police and firefighters.

The driver, aged 44, has been taken to Lautoka Aspen Hospital for treatment.
