Tragedy on the Roads: Are We Doing Enough for Safety?

Spread the love

The loss of a loved one in a road accident can be incredibly painful, a sentiment that was felt deeply by Roger Qoro as he mourned the tragic death of his son, Roger Qoro Jr., a 12-year-old from Sabeto Village, Nadi. The young boy died after allegedly falling off a moving carrier transporting tents, following a New Year’s picnic at Natadola Beach organized by the Revival Church.

On the day of the incident, Roger Jr. traveled to the beach via bus but opted to return with friends in a different vehicle. Witnesses immediately rushed him to Sigatoka Hospital, but Mr. Qoro received the heartbreaking news of his son’s passing later that evening; the boy had suffered severe internal injuries and bruising.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing dialogue about the importance of road safety. Despite annual discussions aimed at raising awareness, road fatalities continue to occur, signaling a pressing need for continuous conversations surrounding safe road practices. This includes adhering to road guidelines, ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, and managing time effectively during travel.

Drivers also need to prioritize the safety of passengers and adopt better practices while on the road. Moreover, there is a need for improved road conditions, as many roads show signs of neglect, such as potholes that can pose significant hazards, especially during adverse weather. The visibility of road markings is another area needing attention, as faded lines can lead to confusion and accidents.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu expressed his condolences and noted that despite police efforts, irresponsible driving behavior contributes to such tragedies. This calls attention to the need for a cultural shift regarding road safety. Early education and more rigorous defensive driving courses could be pivotal in instilling safe driving habits.

As we embrace the new year, there is a collective opportunity for communities to unite and tackle the challenge of road safety. It’s crucial to recognize that lives depend on this continued effort; encouraging responsible driving can lead to safer roads for everyone.

In summary, the accident that took young Roger Qoro Jr.’s life serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety and the shared responsibility we have to protect one another on the roads. By fostering a culture of safe driving and advocating for improved infrastructure, we can work towards preventing further tragedies.
