Tragedy Lurks: Are Our Children Safe?

Concerns regarding child welfare have been raised following a recent incident involving a toddler found wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s safety, warning that tragedies are likely to occur if neglect continues.

The police were alerted to the situation when two women discovered the child and brought him to a nearby police station. In a response shared on social media, the police called for assistance in locating the child’s parents or guardians. Fortunately, following the widespread attention created by the post, the toddler was reunited with his family.

Commissioner Chew highlighted that the police would investigate instances of child neglect seriously, including potential legal ramifications for parents or guardians involved. He noted that this was not an isolated event, expressing alarm over similar incidents in the past, including cases of children suffering severe injuries or death due to negligence.

He explained that young children are naturally curious, and a moment of inattention can lead to disastrous consequences. Chew urged all parents and guardians to be more vigilant in supervising their children.

In a related appeal, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran stressed the importance of understanding child welfare and supervision. She referred to a recent incident where a one-year-old boy died after reportedly being struck by a vehicle. The child had left home unnoticed and entered the road.

Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by parents in urban areas regarding childcare but urged them to seek support to ensure their children’s safety and prevent neglect. She emphasized that incidents can have devastating impacts, leading to the loss of innocent lives.
