A man in his 30s has been charged in connection with the death of a one-year-old child in Cunningham last week.
Authorities were notified last Thursday when medical personnel pronounced the child dead at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The case was escalated to the police due to noticeable injuries on the victim, which were believed to be the result of an assault.
Following an investigation, police discovered that the accused, who is the mother’s defacto partner, allegedly had a history of abusive behavior. Additional inquiries indicated that the accused had also purportedly assaulted the victim’s 3-year-old brother, who was found at the residence with visible injuries.
Investigators consulted with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, resulting in the man being formally charged with one count of murder, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. He is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
