A tragic incident unfolded at Natadola Beach on Sunday, leading to the drowning of 15-year-old Rihan Ali, a Year 11 student at Nadi Muslim College. The beach outing was meant to be a family picnic, but it turned into a devastating loss for Rihan’s parents, Imrana and Imran Ali.
Rihan’s mother expressed her heartbreak, stating, “My world is shattered into pieces because my son whom I loved dearly has left me and gone too soon.” The family had gone to the beach around midday, not knowing the tragic turn of events that awaited them.
His father described Rihan as a well-behaved boy with a bright academic future. Rihan was actively involved in religious activities at the Mulomulo mosque and was recognized for his exemplary behavior and values at school. “He rarely missed school and always looked forward to his classes and seeing his friends every day,” Mr. Ali noted.
Imrana Ali reflected on the family’s recent plans and the importance of the picnic, revealing that Rihan had insisted on going despite her concerns about the weather. “Since he is my second youngest, I have a soft spot for him; I just had to agree on going for the picnic as school was also about to start on Tuesday,” she shared.
A police spokesperson confirmed that Rihan was enjoying a family picnic when the drowning incident occurred. The community came together to mourn as Rihan’s funeral was held at the Mulomulo Muslim Cemetery the following day.
