A tragic incident occurred at Suva Harbour last week, resulting in the loss of Alifereti Radrodro, a 28-year-old employee of Goundar Shipping Limited. The young man was attempting to retrieve a drifting dinghy from the Lomaiviti Princess 8 vessel when he was swept away by strong currents. Despite his efforts, he was unable to recover the boat and was lost to the waves.
Sema Radrodro, Alifereti’s father, expressed his profound grief, calling his son a kind-hearted individual with aspirations of becoming an engineer in the shipping industry. Alifereti was the eldest of nine siblings, and his father reminisced about the close bond they shared. The devastating news broke to him while he was attending a funeral gathering, and he recalled his son’s last conversation with his mother, unaware it would be their final exchange.
As search efforts concluded without locating his son’s body, Sema expressed hope that family members, including some of Alifereti’s cousins who organized a new search party, would be successful in finding him. The family is planning to hold a memorial service for Alifereti on Friday, praying that his body can be recovered in time for a proper farewell.
This heartbreaking story reflects the deep love and connection within the Radrodro family amidst their sorrow, showcasing the community’s willingness to come together during such a challenging time. The tale of Alifereti is a reminder of the aspirations many young people hold and the impact they leave on the lives of those around them.
A positive perspective can be gathered from the community spirit as family and friends rally to support each other and remember Alifereti’s legacy.
