A grieving father, Sema Radrodro, has shared his heartbreak after the loss of his son, Alifereti Radrodro, who tragically drowned at Suva Harbour last week. The 28-year-old was attempting to retrieve a drifting dinghy from the Lomaiviti Princess 8 when he was swept away by strong currents.

Alifereti, an employee of Goundar Shipping Limited and the eldest of nine siblings, had dreamed of becoming an engineer within the shipping industry. His father remembered him as a kind-hearted individual who was well-liked and maintained strong relationships within his community.

Sema recalled receiving the shocking news of his son’s demise while attending a funeral gathering and expressed the profound loss felt by the family. Just before the incident, Alifereti had a lengthy conversation with his mother, unaware that it would be their last.

Despite the challenges, Sema Radrodro held onto hope that his son’s body would be found, stating that family cousins had decided to organize a search party to continue the effort. He expressed a desire for a proper farewell, highlighting Alifereti’s caring nature and the relationships he built throughout his life.

The family plans to hold a memorial service for Alifereti on Friday, and they are hopeful that they will recover his body beforehand. This tragic event underscores the importance of safety in water activities and the lasting impact of community support during difficult times.

This story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the communal bonds that can provide solace in moments of grief, showing how a community can come together to support one another during tragedies.
