The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) unit, part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, is presently looking into the drowning of a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka.
Minister Agni Deo Singh confirmed that initial inquiries indicated a 50-year-old Japanese tourist tragically drowned while swimming alone on the morning of November 4, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM.
Singh emphasized that the NOHSS is conducting a thorough investigation to assess whether the resort had adequate procedures and systems established to safeguard guests during their activities. This investigation will include a review of the level of supervision for guests and the emergency response protocols in place for both staff and visitors.
Additionally, the NOHSS is collaborating with authorities to collect medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid in their investigation. Singh noted the importance of hotel management identifying potential hazards and implementing effective control strategies to avert similar incidents in the future. A detailed report will be compiled once the investigation reaches its conclusion.
The National OHS Services routinely inspects all workplaces, including resorts, throughout Fiji to ensure compliance with legal safety standards. When necessary, the unit issues enforcement notices to address non-compliance and prompt employers to take corrective measures.
While this incident is undoubtedly tragic, it highlights the crucial need for rigorous safety protocols in the hospitality industry, ultimately aiming to enhance the protection of guests and ensure their well-being during their stay.
As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that the resort will learn valuable lessons that can lead to improved safety measures for all visitors in the future.
