The Assistant Transport Minister, Naisa Tuinaceva, has announced a comprehensive plan aimed at tackling traffic congestion within the busy Suva-Nausori corridor. Tuinaceva proposes that instead of solely implementing engineering solutions, a fundamental shift in the behavior of road users is crucial for effectively addressing the problem.
He pointed out that if drivers modify their travel habits, the frequent and frustrating traffic jams can be reduced. The Minister encourages the public to utilize public transportation, explore carpooling options, and adjust their travel times to avoid peak periods. “We are encouraging people to use public transport, we are encouraging people to do carpooling, and we are encouraging people if they can change their travel time,” Tuinaceva stated, urging those able to leave early for work or school to help ease congestion.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is supporting these initiatives by working on improving public transport services. LTA Chair Inosi Kuridrani emphasized the need for a reliable and consistent bus service, particularly for residents in semi-urban areas, which could encourage more people to choose public transport over private vehicles.
In a broader context, the government’s long-term strategies include optimizing traffic light systems for enhanced efficiency and better management of critical junctions. This initiative aligns with ongoing infrastructure upgrades designed to address persistent traffic issues in the area. Previous reports have outlined significant road expansions for key routes, aimed at improving major thoroughfares to alleviate congestion.
This multifaceted approach demonstrates a commitment not only to immediate traffic relief but also to establishing a sustainable and efficient transport network for all residents of Fiji. As a result, the community remains optimistic that these extensive measures will lead to smoother commutes in the future, contributing to better connectivity and socio-economic development across the nation.
These measures also highlight the importance of community involvement in adapting daily travel habits, which can foster a sustainable urban environment, reduce dependence on personal vehicles, and enhance public transport utilization and overall traffic flow.
