Traffic Trials in Nadi: Solutions or More Congestion?

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials unveiled in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) have generated a mix of reactions among local residents and commuters. Designed to reduce traffic congestion, these trials involve significant modifications to existing traffic layouts that will necessitate the removal and reconstruction of several structures.

As part of the trial, all traffic signals throughout the town are temporarily turned off. Delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad from Danny’s Pte Limited voiced his frustrations about the delays directly resulting from these changes. He noted, “I have to deliver to a few places before coming to town, but due to the one-hour traffic, I couldn’t deliver on time. This delay has even affected my lunch break.”

On the flip side, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu reported a perceived improvement in traffic flow but suggested that widening the main street could further enhance the situation. “I think FRA should clear all the car parks, pot plants, and palm trees on the main street to make the road wider,” he recommended.

Commuter Rima Chand, who travels from Sonasali to Nadi, highlighted some benefits of the two-way traffic system, indicating it could lead to fuel savings for drivers despite a longer travel time of about an hour. In contrast, Janend Ram expressed a preference for the previous one-way system, stating, “One-way traffic reduces congestion in town.”

The FRA has scheduled the reconstruction phase to take place from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by a trial of the new traffic layout from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025. Key changes being implemented include transitioning Queens Road to a single-lane two-way street, reconfiguring Andrews Road and Raniga Street, and restricting heavy vehicles from the main street while allowing them on selected alternative routes.

The FRA encourages public feedback regarding the trial, emphasizing the importance of resident insights to optimize traffic flow and mitigate congestion in the long haul.

In summary, while the LATM trials in Nadi Town present challenges for some, they also offer opportunities for improvement in traffic management. The proactive approach taken by the FRA to seek public feedback signals a commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and addressing community concerns, which can be a hopeful step toward a better commuting experience for everyone involved.
