Traffic Trials in Nadi: Progress or Problems?

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) are drawing mixed reactions from local residents and commuters. The goal of these trials is to ease traffic congestion by redesigning traffic flow layouts, which will involve the demolition and rebuilding of certain structures in the area.

As part of the trial, all traffic signals in the town have been temporarily turned off. This has led to varied experiences among road users. Rajinesh Prasad, a delivery driver with Danny’s Pte Limited, voiced his concerns about delays, stating that the significant traffic jam, which lasted an hour, impacted his delivery schedule and lunch break.

On the other hand, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu noticed some improvements in traffic flow but suggested that widening the main street could further enhance the situation. He recommended clearing parking areas, pot plants, and palm trees to create more roadway space.

Rima Chand, who travels from Sonasali to Nadi, pointed out some benefits of the two-way traffic system, claiming it could save fuel for drivers, although she acknowledged the inconvenience of long traffic delays. In contrast, Janend Ram expressed a preference for the previous one-way system, citing it as a more effective means to reduce congestion in town.

The reconstruction phase of the project will take place from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by the testing of the new traffic layout from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025.

Noteworthy changes include:

– Queens Road (Main Street) will transition to a single-lane two-way traffic format.
– Andrews Road and Raniga Street will be reconfigured for single-lane two-way traffic.
– Naitavo Lane’s direction will switch to one-way traffic.
– Sahu Khan Lane, Clay Street, and Market Lane will remain as single-lane one-way roads.
– Baker Lane and Vunavau Lane will have their directions reversed to optimize traffic flow.
– Heavy vehicles will be barred from the main street but allowed on Andrews Street, Raniga Street, and Ratu Naevo Road.

The FRA has encouraged community members to share their feedback on the trial in hopes of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion over time.

In summary, while the trials have introduced challenges for some drivers, they also present opportunities for long-term improvements in traffic management. With ongoing community input and adjustments to the trial, there’s potential for a more efficient transportation experience for all.
