Traditional Leaders Called to Battle Drug Crisis in Tailevu

Traditional leaders in Tailevu province have been called upon to collaborate with the government in the fight against drug trafficking. During a recent community meeting, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that Fiji lacks the resources to effectively control the influx of illicit drugs. He suggested that encouraging youth to reject drugs is one way that traditional leaders can support the government’s efforts.

iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu echoed this sentiment, urging leaders to fulfill their responsibilities in safeguarding their communities. He noted that members of the iTaukei community have frequently been associated with various illegal activities. Vasu encouraged leaders to engage in conversations with their constituents about these issues.

“It’s time to speak the truth,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of discussing pressing matters occurring within villages rather than leaving the conversation to external groups. Vasu stressed that addressing these challenges starts at the family and community levels. He reassured leaders that when they initiate these discussions, people are more open to talking because of their shared kinship.

He cautioned that if these issues are left to government intervention, they will be addressed strictly through legal channels. Vasu urged the vanua to consider actions that could help tackle this significant challenge facing the community.
