Tradition Revived: WO1 Laitia Liloma Takes Charge as Fiji’s New Garrison Sergeant Major

On February 14, 2025, the Force Training Group (FTG) celebrated a momentous occasion with the investiture ceremony appointing Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Laitia Liloma as the new Garrison Sergeant Major (GSM). This ceremony marked the revival of a long-forgotten tradition, as it was discovered that WO1 Liloma’s late father had also served as a GSM and received an official appointment letter.

Commanding Officer Lt. Col Jeremaia Waqanisau read the appointment letter aloud, which detailed the critical responsibilities of the GSM, the highest-ranking soldier in a garrison. WO1 Liloma’s new role involves advising the Commanding Officer on matters concerning other ranks and their families, mentoring personnel, and maintaining unit traditions and standards.

Having recently completed the US Sergeant Major Course at the US Sergeant Major Academy in June 2024, WO1 Liloma brings a wealth of experience to this significant position. His previous accolades include a commendation from the Australian Defence Force for completing the ADF Joint Warrant Officers Course and his graduation from the Australian War College in December 2019.

Lt. Col Waqanisau commended WO1 Liloma’s achievements, underscoring the essential role of the GSM in fostering discipline, morale, and operational excellence within the unit.

This event not only honors WO1 Liloma’s lineage and contributions to the military but also embodies a hopeful future for leadership within Fiji’s defense forces. His appointment signifies continuity and a commitment to preserving the values and traditions of the armed forces while also paving the way for future generations to strive for excellence.

In summary, the investiture of WO1 Laitia Liloma as Garrison Sergeant Major highlights the importance of tradition and service in the Fiji Military Forces, offering a promising outlook for leadership and operational integrity within the military.
