In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa, a remarkable narrative of perseverance and innovation is emerging within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has brought transformative change not just to his life but to many local cane farmers by stepping in as a tractor service provider, addressing a critical gap in the industry.
After completing Form 4, Murti began working as a cane harvester and later managed Food Process at Batiri Citrus Farm. However, he found his true potential when he identified a substantial opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, following a new initiative introduced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with backing from Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti boldy ventured into the role of a transport service provider. He noted, “I saw a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it hard for farmers to prepare their land.” Understanding that many growers could not afford upfront payments, he utilized the FSC’s business plan and work order system to provide services without needing immediate cash.
Starting with a single tractor, Murti leveraged his experience to assist local farmers with land preparation, quickly gaining a reputation for reliability. His business has since expanded to a fleet of six tractors, alongside essential farming implements like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, which are crucial for sugarcane cultivation.
“The support from FSC field officials and my team has been vital for my growth,” Murti shared. “The work order system allowed me to operate it like a real business, benefiting both myself and the farmers.”
In addition to his service provision, Murti has resumed farming, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year with plans for further expansion.
