In the Solove Sector of Fiji, an inspiring success story is emerging that exemplifies determination and innovation in the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has dramatically improved his life and the livelihoods of numerous cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, addressing a pressing need in the industry.

After leaving school in Form 4, Murti initially worked as a cane harvester and later managed Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). However, he discovered a significant opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector thanks to a new initiative by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with backing from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti made the courageous decision to become a transport service provider. He observed a lack of tractors in the sector, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their land.

“Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without needing immediate cash payments,” he explained. “It was a win-win for everyone.”

Starting with a single tractor, Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to aid local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly gained recognition among farmers.

Today, his business has grown significantly, featuring a fleet of six tractors and essential implements such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—crucial tools for sugarcane farming.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to expand the business,” he stated. “The work order system allowed me to operate it like a legitimate business, benefiting both the farmers and myself.”

Additionally, Mr. Murti has returned to cane farming. This year, he cultivated 7.5 acres of cane and is planning further growth in his agricultural ventures.
