Toxicology reports have confirmed that no illegal substances or methanol were detected in the ingredients or the cocktails served to the seven guests who experienced illness at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast last Saturday.
During a press conference last night, Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism, shared the test results as investigations by the Ministry of Health and police continue. The affected guests, all of whom are women, included four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents, who were hospitalized at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka after consuming Pina Coladas from the resort’s restaurant. They presented symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues.
Minister Gavoka expressed relief over the toxicology findings, stating, “We are pleased to report the findings of the toxicology report and also of the testing ingredients of the drinks served at the Warwick Fiji last weekend.” He confirmed that no illicit substances or methanol were found in the drink samples. Furthermore, he noted that all affected individuals have now been discharged from medical care and have fully recovered.
These results have brought considerable relief, especially regarding concerns about alcohol poisoning, which is vital news for Fiji’s tourism sector. Gavoka emphasized that the well-being of visitors is a top priority and that these findings will help reassure international travelers about the safety of visiting Fiji.
This incident highlights the importance of quick medical response and transparency in ensuring safety within the hospitality industry. With the affected individuals now recovered, the tourism sector can move forward positively, fostering confidence in travelers seeking to explore Fiji’s beautiful destinations.
The swift actions taken by health officials and the resort demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high safety standards, which is encouraging for the future of tourism in the region.
