The escalating problem of public alcohol consumption is giving rise to increased instances of disorderly conduct in Savusavu, according to Shankar Singh, chairperson of the Special Administrators. He expressed concern that these growing occurrences of drunkenness reflect negatively on the police force and their level of service.

Mr. Singh emphasized the need for more police patrols, particularly on weekends when the number of intoxicated individuals roaming the streets tends to peak. He noted, “On weekends, there are groups of drunkards walking around town, which makes it a very dangerous time to be in our community.” He claimed that residents have voiced their dissatisfaction, pointing out that although police officers arrive at the scene, they often do not take any substantial action before leaving.

In defense of the police response, Divisional Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka explained that he held a discussion with the special administrators about these concerns a fortnight ago. He mentioned that a Viber group has been established, allowing council members to easily communicate any pressing issues. SSP Baledrokadroka assured that all matters raised during their meeting have been addressed through the proper channels at the special administrator’s office.

This situation highlights the importance of community involvement and cooperation between residents and law enforcement. As outreach efforts and communication channels like the Viber group are utilized, there is hope that more effective strategies to manage public drunkenness can be implemented, creating a safer and more enjoyable environment for everyone in Savusavu.
