Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized the vital role of tourism as not only the economic engine of the country but also as a connection between diverse cultures, fostering mutual understanding and promoting global peace.
During his speech at World Tourism Day 2024, Gavoka highlighted that tourism is fundamental to the economy, providing jobs for thousands and contributing significantly to national development. He pointed out Fiji’s dedication to peace through tourism, reflected in initiatives that encourage cultural exchange and understanding. Gavoka mentioned the government’s commitment to expanding tourism in Fiji, citing the recent launch of the ‘Na Vualiku Program for Vanua Levu’, which aims to enhance tourism in the Northern Division by developing infrastructure and showcasing local attractions.
As Fiji marks World Tourism Day, he urged a reaffirmation of the commitment to use tourism as a means to promote peace. He remarked on tourism’s potential to unite individuals, foster understanding, and contribute to a more peaceful world. Looking ahead, Gavoka called for a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and respect in the tourism sector to ensure its unifying power continues to thrive.
