Tourism: The Unseen Gateway to Peace and Cultural Connection

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized that tourism is not only vital for the country’s economy but also an essential link connecting various cultures, promoting mutual understanding, and encouraging global peace.

During the World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations, Gavoka highlighted that tourism serves as a fundamental aspect of the economy, supporting the livelihoods of many and playing a significant role in the nation’s development.

He noted, “Beyond the economic advantages, tourism is key in uniting people, dismantling barriers, and fostering enduring relationships.” Gavoka pointed out that Fiji is dedicated to promoting peace through tourism, as evidenced by initiatives designed to enhance cultural exchange and understanding.

The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that the government is focused on expanding tourism in Fiji through several strategic programs. One such initiative is the recent launch of the ‘Na Vualiku Program for Vanua Levu,’ which aims to enhance tourism in the Northern Division by improving infrastructure and highlighting local attractions.

As Fiji commemorates World Tourism Day, Gavoka called for a renewed commitment to using tourism as a tool for peace. He stated that tourism has the unique ability to bring people together, encourage understanding, and contribute to a more peaceful world.

Looking towards the future, he urged adherence to the values of sustainability, inclusivity, and respect to ensure that tourism continues to unite individuals, promote understanding, and foster global peace.
