Tourism: The Pathway to Peace and Prosperity in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized the vital role of tourism as not only the main economic driver for the nation but also as a means to connect various cultures, enhance mutual understanding, and advance global peace.

While addressing the World Tourism Day 2024, Gavoka highlighted that tourism is fundamental to Fiji’s economy, providing jobs for thousands and making significant contributions to national development. He remarked, “Beyond the economic benefits, tourism plays a crucial role in bringing people together, breaking down barriers, and building lasting relationships.”

Gavoka stated that Fiji’s dedication to promoting peace through tourism is reflected in initiatives designed to encourage cultural exchange and understanding. He noted that the government is focused on expanding the tourism sector through initiatives such as the recently introduced ‘Na Vualiku Program for Vanua Levu’, which aims to enhance tourism in the Northern Division by improving infrastructure and showcasing local attractions.

As Fiji commemorates World Tourism Day, the Deputy Prime Minister urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to using tourism as a means to promote peace. He asserted that tourism possesses the power to unite, cultivate understanding, and contribute to a more peaceful world. Looking ahead, he urged adherence to principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and respect to ensure that tourism continues to serve as a unifying force and a vehicle for global harmony.
