Tourism: The Bridge to Peace and Prosperity in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized the crucial role of tourism as both an economic driver and a unifying force for diverse cultures, enhancing mutual understanding and promoting global peace.

While addressing the audience at World Tourism Day 2024, Gavoka highlighted that tourism is a vital component of Fiji’s economy, providing numerous jobs and significantly contributing to national development.

He stated, “In addition to its economic advantages, tourism is essential in connecting people, dismantling barriers, and forging enduring relationships.”

Gavoka pointed out Fiji’s dedication to fostering peace through tourism, as reflected in initiatives aimed at enriching cultural exchange and comprehension.

He mentioned the government’s commitment to advancing tourism in Fiji, notably through the recent introduction of the ‘Na Vualiku Program for Vanua Levu’, which seeks to enhance tourism in the Northern Division by improving infrastructure and promoting local attractions.

As Fiji commemorates World Tourism Day, Gavoka encouraged everyone to reaffirm their dedication to using tourism as a means for peace.

He underscored that tourism possesses the unique ability to bring people together, promote understanding, and create a more harmonious world. Moving forward, he advocated for a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and respect to ensure that tourism continues to unite and enlighten us all.
