Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, has dismissed allegations raised on social media regarding potential conflicts of interest within the organization. An anonymous blog posted on the Fiji Transparency Facebook page last Sunday accused Tourism Fiji of allowing key personnel to engage in side businesses that breach conflict of interest guidelines, suggesting a culture of nepotism and cronyism.
The blog specifically called out Sunishma Singh, the former sustainability lead for Tourism Fiji, for allegedly holding both a senior public service position and serving as director of a consultancy firm, ESG Pacific, which she co-founded with Joel Abraham, the former CEO of the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission. Fiji Transparency called for an immediate investigation into Singh’s actions, asserting that her dual roles represent a serious conflict of interest and misuse of her taxpayer-funded position.
Additionally, the blog raised concerns about Hill’s management practices, noting the recent appointment of his wife, Kellie Newstead, as marketing and brand manager at Tropica Island Resort, which it claims may violate immigration laws that restrict expatriate spouses from working in Fiji unless local talent is unavailable.
In response, Hill expressed his reluctance to engage with anonymous online criticisms but felt it was necessary to clarify the situation. He stated that he had provided clear answers in the comments of the original Facebook post, emphasizing that neither he nor Tourism Fiji has anything to conceal.
This situation highlights the importance of transparency and ethical governance in public organizations, particularly as officials navigate the intricacies of both public service responsibilities and private sector interests. Maintaining public trust is crucial, and proactive communication from leadership can play a significant role in addressing concerns raised by the community.
Looking ahead, it is hopeful that this incident will serve as a catalyst for clearer protocols and practices within Tourism Fiji, reinforcing ethical considerations and ensuring that the organization operates transparently for the benefit of all Fijians.
