Tourism at Risk: The Hidden Challenge of Illicit Drugs in Fiji

The managing director of Yatule Resort and Spa and Tour Managers Fiji Group, Damend Gounder, has identified the sale and use of illicit drugs as a major challenge facing the tourism industry. His remarks came during the reopening of the refurbished resort in Natadola, Sigatoka.

Gounder expressed concern that ongoing reports of drug-related incidents could negatively impact Fiji’s tourism sector. He warned that if illicit drugs become associated with tourism, it could deter visitors seeking destinations for honeymoons, family trips, or school celebrations.

He urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to engage with communities and schools to promote positive values and education as a way to combat these issues. Gounder highlighted the commitment of his organization to educational initiatives, stating that their goals extend beyond commercial interests and emphasize corporate social responsibility, especially in education and environmental matters.

Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, acknowledged that addressing drug-related activities is primarily a police responsibility. However, he noted that the tourism industry remains proactive in tackling the challenges posed by drugs. Hill reiterated the desire for Fiji to be free from drug-related incidents involving tourists and commended government efforts to combat drug trafficking.

Livai Driu, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, confirmed that there have been instances of tourists involved in drug-related cases. He emphasized the importance of information sharing among hoteliers and their security firms, pointing out that better communication is crucial in addressing these problems effectively.
