There are 10 spots open for the Fleming Roosters Touch Rugby revival tournament, set to take place at the St Thomas Primary School grounds in Lautoka on September 28. Misa Rokovua, a committee member, shared this information in an interview with SUNsports.
“The 10 spots are allocated for men’s teams, each with a $100 entry fee,” Rokovua noted. He added that although two teams have shown interest, they have not yet paid their registration fees.
Rokovua emphasized that this tournament aims to rekindle interest in touch rugby within Lautoka. “We want to engage the youth in this sport to steer them away from drugs, nightclub activities, and petty crime,” he stated.
He encouraged participation from anyone interested in joining the tournament, specifically inviting those without a team to come out for a family fun day. Furthermore, Rokovua mentioned the search for sponsors, as much of the funding for the tournament relies on the organizing committee’s efforts.
“It’s quite challenging, but we are grateful for the support we receive from the boys during fundraising initiatives. Convincing teams to participate poses its own challenge,” he acknowledged.
Additionally, Rokovua expressed the hope of including a Police team in the tournament to help raise awareness among the youth regarding the drug crisis affecting the nation.
