The selection process for a new Commissioner of Police is currently underway. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), has announced the formation of a selection committee tasked with reviewing the 29 applications received for the position.
The COC will reconvene on December 16 to evaluate the candidates who have been shortlisted. Prime Minister Rabuka stated, “We have selected the selection panel.” He further noted that the COC meets routinely on the third Thursday of each month, affirming the scheduled meeting for December 16.
According to Section 129(4) of the Constitution, the President appoints the Commissioner of Police based on the advice of the COC and after consulting with the relevant minister overseeing the Fiji Police Force.
Reports indicate that several senior officers have expressed interest in the role, including former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, and UN assistant secretary general Unaisi Vuniwaqa. Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has emphasized the urgency of appointing a new Commissioner to ensure continuity, coherence, and morale within the Fiji Police Force.
