The Tongan women’s rugby league team is fully prepared to face Samoa in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship match at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Tongan international Metanoia Fotu-Moala emphasized the team’s determination to secure a victory, acknowledging Samoa’s strong reputation in the sport.
“We are concentrated on our strengths and what we can achieve together,” she stated, highlighting the team’s focus during their preparations.
Fotu-Moala recently made headlines as the first player signed from local rugby for the One New Zealand Warriors as they prepare to rejoin the NRLW next season. At 25, she is following in the footsteps of her sister Teuila, a former Kiwi Fern and NRLW premiership winner, and her twin sister Maatuleio.
The Warriors’ latest signing from grassroots rugby marks an important milestone for the club, reflecting the growth of women’s rugby league in New Zealand. The Tongan team seeks to earn their spot back in the Pacific Cup Championship, competing against Samoa, who shares the same ambition.
“We draw inspiration from former players like Mele Hufanga, who continue to motivate us,” Fotu-Moala noted. She also expressed pride in representing their nation alongside teammates from diverse backgrounds. The team is in high spirits as they aim to deliver a strong performance in front of their supporters on Saturday.
