At least 15 individuals sustained injuries when a bus carrying Tongan workers rolled over near Broadlands, situated between Rotorua and Taupō. The incident occurred at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road shortly before 7:30 AM on Sunday. Authorities reported that the bus was the sole vehicle involved in the unfortunate accident.
By 10 AM, emergency services had airlifted 10 of the injured individuals to various hospitals. Of those transported, three were in serious condition and two suffered moderate injuries, while the rest had sustained minor injuries.
The bus was transporting 30 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers from the Pacific, who had just arrived in New Zealand earlier that morning and were on their way to begin employment with Mr Apple in Hawke’s Bay. Mike Sorensen, the Pacific manager from Immigration New Zealand, confirmed that 13 of the injured workers were taken to hospitals, and some are expected to be discharged later on Sunday.
Following the accident, 17 of the workers proceeded to Hawke’s Bay, and the employer, Gary Jones, indicated that 21 workers would arrive in Hawke’s Bay on Sunday night, where they would be greeted with a warm meal. A physiotherapist was also at the site to assist the workers, and additional healthcare professionals and counselors will be available the following day to provide further support.
In light of the incident, Immigration New Zealand pledges to continue offering assistance to those affected. Although the road is expected to remain closed for some time, police have implemented diversion routes at Ohaaki Road and Vaile Road.
This incident marks the second serious crash involving RSE workers in a mere three months, following an earlier tragedy in which three workers lost their lives in a crash on State Highway One south of Auckland in August.
Ultimately, while the situation is undoubtedly challenging, the swift response by emergency services and the subsequent support laid out by both the employer and Immigration New Zealand reflects a community’s commitment to care for those impacted. The hope remains that all injured will receive the necessary medical attention and recover swiftly, allowing them to start their new journey in New Zealand positively.
