The Tonga women’s rugby league team is prepared to give their all as they face Samoa in the Pacific Bowl Championship at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium tomorrow. Tongan international Metanoia Fotu-Moala emphasized their determination to win, acknowledging the challenge presented by their opponents.
Fotu-Moala mentioned, “During our preparations, we know Samoa is a very good team. We are focused on our own strengths and what we can do as a team.” The 25-year-old has recently signed with the One New Zealand Warriors in preparation for their upcoming season in the National Rugby League Women (NRLW), making her the first player from local competitions to join the team.
She is the third member of her family to become a contracted NRLW player, following her sister Teuila, a former Kiwi Fern and premiership winner, and twin sister Maatuleio, who recently completed her debut season with the St George Illawarra Dragons.
Known as Noia, Fotu-Moala is the Warriors’ 11th signing and notably the first to emerge from grassroots rugby league in New Zealand. The Tongan team is aware of the hard work required to reclaim a spot in the Pacific Cup Championship, with their opponents aiming for the same goal.
Fotu-Moala expressed admiration for former players like Mele Hufanga, stating, “They inspire us and are role models for us still playing.” When discussing the team’s unity and background diversity, she shared, “We are honored to represent our nation. It is a very warming experience and we will play this Saturday for our supporters.” The team remains in high spirits as they approach the match, eager to deliver a strong performance.
