The Tonga women’s rugby league team is fully prepared to face Samoa in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship match at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Tongan international Metanoia Fotu-Moala emphasized the team’s determination to secure a win on Saturday, recognizing the strong capabilities of their opponents.
“During our preparations, we know Samoa is a very good team,” she stated. “We are focused on our own strengths and what we can achieve as a team.”
Fotu-Moala, who recently signed with the One New Zealand Warriors as the first recruit from local rugby league for their return to the National Rugby League Women (NRLW) next year, is proud to be part of a family legacy in the sport. At 25, she follows in the footsteps of her sister Teuila and twin sister Maatuleio, both of whom have played in the NRLW.
Teuila was part of the Brisbane premiership-winning team in the league’s inaugural season in 2018 before moving to St George Illawarra, while Maatuleio completed her first season with the Dragons.
Known as Noia, she is the Warriors’ 11th signing and the first to emerge from grassroots rugby league in New Zealand. The Tongan team is aware that they must work diligently to reclaim their position in the Pacific Cup Championship, with Samoa sharing the same ambition.
“We draw a lot of inspiration from our former players like Mele Hufanga. They encourage us and serve as a role model for those of us still playing,” Fotu-Moala noted.
When asked about the team’s strengths, she responded, “We all come from different backgrounds and are honored to represent our nation. It’s a truly rewarding experience, and we will play this Saturday for our supporters.” She also mentioned that the team is in positive spirits leading up to the game and is eager to deliver a strong performance.
